Bonbonniere
A bonbonneire is what we associate with today when we think of wedding favors. They were trinket boxes, made of glass or ceramics, that were filled by the bride and groom with items that would have symbolized wealth or royalty, like granulated sugar or sugar cubes. This type of sugar was very rare and valuable and only seen at the tables of the rich. Things like almonds were also a symbol of wealth and good fortune. Many of you may remember sugar coated almonds as wedding favors that have been around for hundreds of years.
