Brockwitz Germany Regina's Star Blue Square Vase

Description

I purchased this vase from my friends Dick & Sherry Betker in April of 2018 during the HOACGA convention. Dick tells me that while surfing eBay in May of 2002, five years into their collecting of Carnival glass, he came across a blue square vase. Knowing enough about our hobby, he knew it had to be European because the big five U.S. Carnival glass makers never did a square vase.

The seller, who was from Finland, had no name for the piece and just stated the size; 7" tall by 2" square. The little bit he had learned about European glass gave him no clue as to the pattern name. This later turned out to be a gift of sorts.

He learned in the late 90's that if you really wanted a piece from eBay you needed to bid high and bid last so that's exactly what he did and won it.

When it arrived, the mystery continued. All information he acquired was in the form of books. In searching, he still had no clue so he wrote to his friends, Glen & Stephen Thistlewood, and found out that this vase was made by Brockwitz. Come to find out, this was the very first one reported and it had no name so he and Sherry could give it a name themselves. Now that's a gift!

He and Sherry both knew who they wanted to name it after. It was his Mom, Regina. So whatever happens from here on in, this vase will always be known as Regina's Star.

For more information, visit this excellent article written by Glen & Stephen Thistlewood called "Baby, You're So Square!" where you'll learn more about this and other exquisite square vases.
