Dugan Apple Blossom Twigs Fiery Amethyst Smooth Edge Ruffled Banana Bowl
Description
Like most Carnival Glass collectors, there are some pieces that you can never see yourself parting with. Some pieces steal your heart right off, as soon as you set eyes on them. This is one of those pieces, for me.
I'm particularly fond of Dugan patterns, apple blossoms and making apple pies, so this one always appealed to me. This beauty has no prestigious pedigree, it was simply an eBay purchase a few years back with poor pictures that turned out lucky for me. This piece is mesmerizing, the iridescence looks like the interior is aflame. I have another amethyst piece by Dugan with this same fiery, pseudo-sunset iridescence, a Circle Scroll two sides up hat whimsey. I wish that they had made much more of it!
According to Carl O. Burns in his book Dugan & Diamond Carnival Glass 1909 - 1931, this pattern was produced only briefly from 1911 - 1912. He further states how much rarer these bowls with the plain exterior and smooth edge are as opposed to those exhibiting the Big Basketweave and saw-tooth edge. The smooth edged plain exterior banana boats were only produced in amethyst and peach opal.
