Dugan Honeycomb aka Honeycomb & Beads Amethyst Low Bowl
Description
Shown here is a 7.25" amethyst low bowl in Dugan's "Honeycomb" pattern, or what some call "Honeycomb & Beads". It carries the "Leaf Rosette & Beads" aka "Flowers & Beads" exterior pattern but can also be found with a plain exterior, most of which are not iridized. Why some refer to the pattern name as "Honeycomb & Beads" is a bit odd to me, since the interior of the bowl has no beads, but nonetheless, it is often called by that name.
This particular bowl has a somewhat odd crimp, which is the least seen crimp combination found on this pattern. First, the bowl is given a Candy Ribbon Edge crimp. Then afterwards, a standard six-point crimp is applied. This is pretty obvious when looking at the bowl and is how it was explained to me at the Fenton factory when I went up several times and was fortunate enough to make eighteen pieces of glass over a three year period under the watchful eye of Dave Fetty and Frank Workman. Tom Fenton headed most of the glass making events and was full of answers to the many questions I had to ask. Also, Dr. Jim Measell, Historian for Fenton Art Glass, could answer most any question a person had to ask of him.
These bowls are probably in the category of "somewhat scarce", depending on the color and edge treatment. There are a host of shapes known, and to date the only colors I'm aware of are Peach Opalescent, Marigold, Amethyst, Purple, and occasionally Oxblood.
I have also owned several plates in the "Leaf Rosette & Beads" aka "Flowers & Beads" pattern, which is an exterior pattern with a plain interior, and these are very nice items as well.
