Dugan Lined Latice Oxblood Squatty Vase
Description
Featured here is a most remarkable Dugan Lined Lattice squatty oxblood vase. It measures 5 1/8” in height and has a 5 ¾” top flare. This dramatic item is unusual in that it has been quite heavily iridized on the interior, the exterior and the bottom. Dugan, and to a greater extent Diamond, was not known to be consistently liberal in applying iridescence to their glass. In fact, sometimes only one side of an item was iridized.
There were several bottom or base treatments done to the Lined Lattice vases. This particular vase features the 9 triangular shaped feet with the mould lines between the feet. There are also vases with the mould line running through the triangular feet; many of these are perched on the tips of the feet. There is also a square footed version, rarer than the triangular footed type.
The Lined Lattice pattern was in production by Dugan (and originally by Northwood) prior to the Carnival Class era. Known as Palisades when not iridized, it was produced in clear green and blue glass and in blue, canary, white and green opalescent glass. Many of these vases are perched on the toes of the triangular feet. In Carnival Glass it can be found in amethyst, black amethyst, horehound, lavender, marigold, peach opal, electric purple and white.
This particular gem came to us at the 2013 ICGA convention auction and came from the collection of Don & Doreen Ashbridge of Canada. The Seeck Auctions catalog pictured shows more beautiful vases featured in this auction. Be sure to click on the main picture twice to see the gorgeous blue iridescence Dugan was so well known for.
