Dugan Spiralex Sapphire Midsize Vase

Description

This very seldom seen beauty is a Spiralex 10 1/2" vase in Dugan / Diamond's rare sapphire Carnival Glass. The production of Spiralex vases was begun by Dugan is 1910 and was continued by Diamond through the early 1920's. Carl O. Burns states in his book "Dugan & Diamond Carnival Glass 1909-1931" that Diamond did produce Carnival Glass, in this Sapphire base color, around 1916. Very rarely found, this Sapphire vase has a satin exterior finish which helps to differentiate it from Diamond's Celeste blue that would carry the onionskin effect.

This vase was made from a four part mould, has a 3 1/2" base with a 24 point star impressed into the marie. There are eight ribs all around; it is 9 1/8" in height at the lowest with a 4" top flare. This particular one has a left twist, but Spiralex and the very similar Dugan vase pattern, Wide Rib, can be found twisted in either direction, sometimes just a little and sometimes very tightly. The way the Sapphire peeks out through the iridescence along the spiral ribs and tips is what causes this vase to be as pretty as it is. Although this is an affordable rarity, my husband and I consider it to be a permanent and priceless asset to our vase collection.
