Fenton Fine Rib Wax Likeness of Unswung Vase from Original Mould
Description
Back in the 90's, I collected Fenton Fine Rib vases. I always wondered what these vases looked like straight from the mould before they were swung. So, around 1996-1997, I called Don Cunningham who was Fenton's head of Special Orders. I asked if he could locate the original mould and make me something from it, but not to alter the shape from its original state.
Here is what he sent me; a vase made of some special type of wax (instead of glass) showing it as it would have come out of the mould before any further work would be done to it. It's 7" tall and a really neat piece. He didn't charge me anything to do it and even sent it to me in a special Fenton box. Shown here is the first photo I've ever taken of it.
I'm sure most Carnival Glass people, especially Fine Rib collectors, would likely know what this was if they had to guess but there are many who wouldn't relate to it when shown, as it is here, in its first stage. Other than my family and people at Fenton, this is the first time this wax vase has been shown to the public.
For me, the ultimate Fine Rib vase would look like this but with a spittoon-shape top. It never hurts to wish.
