Imperial Fashion Smoke Compote
Description
We purchased this compote at the Karen Engel auction. We were not looking to buy it and, in fact, I don't think we even noticed it when we were perusing the auction catalog. We had already set our sights on other pieces at the auction. It wasn't until we were walking along the tables of glass just before the auction to take one final look at everything that Mike spied it sitting behind some plates.
As he brought it forward into the light, it was as if the heavens had opened up and I swear I could hear the hallelujah chorus singing! I've always loved the way Imperial purple iridescence can display itself so gloriously against smoke colored glass and this piece is so exceptional. Plus, the Fashion pattern just lends itself to a beautiful jewel - like a look that I swear I could happily wear as a pendant if it were just smaller!
It's so gorgeous I really don't understand why the whole room wasn't bidding against us but we were lucky and after we won it we almost felt like two thieves in the night!
