Imperial Morning Glory Purple Funeral Vase with Snowflake Base

Description

We went to the ACGA (American Carnival Glass Association) convention in August of 2007. There are many great reasons to attend any carnival glass convention and one of them is the major carnival glass auction they all have.

At this one, there was an Imperial purple Morning Glory 12" funeral vase, the likes which I had never seen before, and here it is.

The base of this funeral vase is very unique. We have four Morning Glory funeral vases and this is the only one with the snowflake pattern. We contacted our friend, Glen Thistlewood, UK of Carnival Glass Worldwide, and she was happy to tell us what she knows about this particular base pattern.

Glen writes, "Imperial catalogues (in 1909 and again in 1915) show the Morning Glory funeral size vase with the snowflake base that yours has Dick. Morning Glory vases come in three base sizes: the funeral vase (which is known in various "swung" heights) has a "wannabe" 5-inch marie/base. I say "wannabe" as my own example is a midge's whisker under 5 inches and I believe this is the norm.

I have scanned the Imperial 1909 catalogue image that shows the snowflake base on the Morning Glory - and I have taken a quick picture of my own purple Morning Glory Funeral vase to show the snowflake base. I hope this helps."

(Thank you Glen for your wonderful reference material and additional photos. Dick, Sherry & I are glad you joined us in this article! Christina)
