Imperial Three Row Smoke Vase
Description
People ask me if I ever get calls or good leads about Carnival Glass because of this site. The answer is yes. I occasionally have a person who will see an item on Showcase and ask if I would be interested in another one. When they ask, sometimes they are looking at one of my items and other times they are talking about another collector's item. Other times they just have something they know is valuable and they ask me if I or someone I know would be interested in purchasing it. It does not happen often but it does happen.
This Imperial Three Row vase came from someone who visited Showcase and thought to call me.They lived on Long Island in New York and they loved to collect vases. They sent me photos and I was smitten with this luscious 7-inch tall vase. We didn't know each other well enough to do business through the mail so they invited me to go see them. I mapped out the trip to be a part of another trip I was planning but it all fell through.
They told me how they enjoyed the Brimfield Antiques Show in Massachusetts so I suggested we meet there and we did. They were a lovely couple. The vase was every bit as beautiful as the photo they sent me and we had a deal.
This vase is called Three Row because it has three horizontal rows of six thumbprints all around. Three you say? Yes, three. Although only two rows are visible, the third row at the top is obliterated in the formation of the 4 1/2" ruffled top.
The bottom half is bulbous, measuring 5" wide, with six concave sections separted by sets of two ribs. The base has a 24-ray star measuring 2 5/8" wide. Basically, it is shaped like a carafe with ruffles.
Marigold seems to be the most common color found in these scarce vases followed by purple next and smoke as the hardest to find. I believe they are only reported in these three colors. For an example of a marigold one, please visit David Doty's Three Row page.
