Maker Unknown Wheat Basket Marigold Candle Lantern
Description
This candle lantern came up for sale on eBay in May of 2017. Mrs. Ellen Whittaker, who lives in Plainwell, Michigan, was the seller and her description went like this:
"Unique antique orange carnival glass candle lantern. It is 15" tall with bale handle up and 11" tall with it down. It is 6" wide. Made of steel with glass globe. It came from old farm and I'm not sure what you call it. It's first one I've ever seen. Steel is somewhat rusted but solid and only adds to it character so I left it."
I really liked its pattern and large size and having been brought up on a farm, it was very interesting to me. I saw there were four people "watching" it and, with a "Buy It Now" price of $59.00, I knew I had to think fast! I quickly hit the button and commited to buy it knowing it would be gone in a matter of moments.
It arrived two days later and I was delighted with it. The iridized shade really has beautiful colors with pink, green and blue highlights on marigold.
The seller took it apart so it would ship safely without breaking the shade so there was assembly required. The shade sits with its widest side down onto a steel round plate with a curved-in rim which receives the shade perfectly, with absolutely no room to spare, and with a gentle twist somehow the shade becomes firmly held there. But before the shade was placed on the steel plate, there was a spike in the middle of the plate where the bottom of a candle could be pressed onto it to hold it upright. Then, after the shade was placed over the candle, a separate steel fixture with a handle would fit down over the top smaller end of the shade. Two metal wires are attached to this fixture that extended down each side of the shade and the L-shaped ends are inserted into a hole on each side by bending them inwards and then releasing them. This connected all three pieces together. The bottom of the lantern has metal ball feet that it sits on.
The shade is in great condition. It was ground up top and on the bottom. The bottom has a rough spot from removing it from the steel holder and it has a slight nick on the top but nothing serious. The metal hood has holes to let the heat and smoke of the candle out. It must be very pretty when it is lighted.
The pattern is two sets of alternating baskets and wheat sheaf designs. I have never seen this pattern so I am going to name it Wheat Basket for now until I can find out who the maker and pattern name is.
