Millersburg Olympic Amethyst Compote
Description
This 3" tall compote is from the same basic mould as the Leaf & Little Flowers. Surrounding the center star is a circle of beads within a square, wreath-like design. Eight smooth panels are seen on the octagon-shaped exterior.
When the late Marie McGee published her book on Millersburg Glass in 1995, this amethyst Olympic compote was included in the late Don Doyle collection. Tom Mordini acquired the compote from Don, and made it available for sale. We purchased it from him in 1998 for $4400.
Only two examples are known in this Millersburg pattern. This compote is the one in amethyst. It is discussed in the "Millersburg Carnival Stems" segment of the www.carnivalglass101.com site.
The other known compote is a green example purchased in 1982 by the late George & Mavis Loescher whose photos of it may be seen in the "Millersburg Stars" segment on our site as well. To update the status of this rarity, we've learned Mavis has just recently sold this green compote to Christina Katsikas who has included it here, in her collection, on the Showcase.
